Hungary vs. Germany: Gamethread and Live Blog—Germany draws 1-1: Initial Observations and Reactions (2024)

Initial Observations

  • Even though this result is irrelevant, the “Marc Cucurella” handball will bring up sour memories for Germany.
  • Alexander Nübel was fantastic. His save in the 67th minute was the best he’s ever made for Germany.
  • Felix Nmecha was average on the night but earned his first international goal in his first international start.

90’+9: Dominik Szoboszlai scores late penalty to salvage the draw. Correct VAR decision by the referee.

89’: Hungary makes their final substitution. Zsombor Gruber on for Barnabás Varga.

87’: Dániel Gera’s hard foul brings out Hungary’s first yellow card.

82’: Another double substitution for Hungary. Roland Sallai and Zsolt Nagy out, Szabolcs Schön and Kevin Csoboth on.

76’: 1-0, Germany! Felix Nmecha taps in the rebound for his first international goal.

72’: Florian Wirtz picks up a yellow card. He’ll now miss the first leg of the quarterfinal.

67’: Alexander Nübel stonewalls Barnabás Varga!

65’: Hungary make their first changes. Tamás Nikitscher and Loïc Négo out, Dániel Gera and Mihály Kata in.

63’: Kai Havertz hits the post! What a volley...would’ve been quite the super sub highlight.

61’: Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, and Florian Wirtz come on for Julian Brandt, Serge Gnabry, and Chris Führich

59’: Julian Brandt opens the scoring line...but is offside by a couple yards.

57’: Nico Schlotterbeck earns the first yellow card of the match.

55’: Benjamin Henrichs goes down in the box, but not enough for a penalty kick.

50’: Serge Gnabry chests down a ball to Robin Gosens, Gosens forces Dénes Dibusz to make his first save of the night.

46’: Second half begins. Robin Gosens subs on for Joshua Kimmich.

Halftime Observations

  • Not nearly as much fun to watch without Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz.
  • Serge Gnabry has no business being on the national team, even in throwaway matches.
  • Nübel looks a lot more comfortable than his first international match (last month against Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Halftime: 0-0 at the midway point. Germany controlling possession, but Hungary has created the better chances.

39’: Alexander Nübel with another big save! Zsolt Nagy’s volley not enough to beat the Bayern Munich loanee.

30’: Benjamin Henrichs’ free kick barely goes over the crossbar.

24’: Alexander Nübel makes a big save!

19’: Barnabás Varga registers Hungary’s first shot of the match.

12’: First shot of the match! Quick turnover, but Serge Gnabry hits it wide.

10’: One foul, zero shots. Germany dominating possession (80%).

3’: Musiala would have scored by now...

1’: Here we goooo!!!

Heavy squad rotation from Julian Naglesmann, but captain Joshua Kimmich refuses to be benched.

After the 7-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday, Germany has already clinched first place in Group A3 of the UEFA Nations League.

Julian Naglesmann has this team humming and will want to replicate the 5-0 victory against Hungary back in September.
