East Timor voted to secede, which led to widespread violence, and long-simmering tensions between Muslims and Christians erupted into rioting and bloodshed. On Christmas Eve 2000, terrorists bombed churches in Medan, Pekanbaru, Batam, Bandung, Sukabumi, Jakarta, Mojokerto, Surabaya and Mataram, leaving 16 dead and scores more injured. A great many American tourists were rightfully scared away by these events and were further influenced by a U.S.
State Department "advisory" (warning) against travel to In donesia. The very same announcement conceded that everything was calm in Bali. Together with most other travel journalists, I feel quite strongly that travel to Bali is still safe and, more than that, a terrifically enriching and inexpensive vacation option. Indonesia is made up of 13,500 islands spread over 3,000 miles. Bali is one of its more remote outposts and the site of a wholly different culture and outlook.
Both traditionally and recently, it has been almost totally immune to the upheavals that have periodically rocked the rest of the country. The placid quality of Balinese life is primarily due to the fact that it is a wholly Hindu society and therefore removed from the clashes between Indonesian Muslims and Christians. Bali is also a cosmopolitan and broad-minded nation, with a longstanding tradition of welcoming visitors. Its economy is tied directly to tourism, and the vast majority of its people make their living off the visitor, either by staffing and running the resorts or by creating the remarkable sculptures, paintings, clothing and furniture for which Bali is renowned. Again: Even the State Department concedes in its advisory that no serious incidents of public disorder have occurred in Bali.
